The Women in STEM Plymouth group held its inaugural meeting on 30th September at Langage Energy Centre, attended by our Managing Director Karen Friendship (pictured centre) who gave the vote of thanks.

The group has been set up to provide a social network for local women involved in science, technology, engineering and maths-related professions.  The group’s aims are to provide support for women with careers in STEM areas; and also to challenge the gender stereotypes that can be associated with these professions.

Karen, who has a degree in Civil Engineering, is strongly supportive of initiatives which encourage women to pursue STEM careers, and has been a long-standing local ambassador for STEM education for girls.

The main speaker at the event was Rosie Majer (pictured right), the Scheme Project Manager for Network Rail’s emergency works to rebuild the Dawlish railway line after the storms of February 2014.

“I’m very pleased to be supporting this event, and the group,” Karen commented. “We’re happy to engage with all those in the Plymouth travel-to-work area – both men and women – who share the vision and can lend support to help the group achieve its aims.”
