National Manufacturing Day: Aldermans to open its doors

Aldermans to open its doors for National Manufacturing Day 2024. Local Plymouth schools, colleges, parents, and community urged to see behind the scenes of what UK manufacturing and engineering careers have to offer.

Aldermans, the award-winning metal fabrication subcontractor, is opening its doors to local school and college students, parents, teachers and the wider Plymouth community for National Manufacturing Day on 26 September 2024.

National Manufacturing Day is an annual event organised by Make UK to celebrate the very best of UK manufacturing and to showcase the range of well-paid, highly skilled careers within the sector. Plymouth-based Aldermans is urging local schools, colleges and people interested in reskilling, to book a visit and join them on National Manufacturing Day to learn new skills and find out more about opportunities available.

Coming behind the scenes, visitors will get a tour of the Aldermans factory, see its high-tech metal fabrication facilities, and get hands-on with augmented reality welding and even make their own miniature metal aeroplanes. The Aldermans team, including its apprentices will be there to answer questions and talk from their own experience about career and training opportunities, and what they love about working in the UK manufacturing and engineering sector.

Karen Friendship, Managing Director of Aldermans: “National Manufacturing Day is such an exciting day that provides real-life behind the scenes access so that people of all ages can see for themselves what working in manufacturing and engineering is really like. We love seeing the surprise on people’s faces, and hope that we encourage more people into such an amazing sector right here on their doorstep.

“Plymouth is one of the UK’s top cities for manufacturing and engineering, with the highest concentration of manufacturing employment of any city in the South of England. 1 in every 8 people is employed in manufacturing in Plymouth*[1], and the UK is the 8th largest manufacturing nation in the world[2]. The opportunities are here and as a local employer we are passionate about passing on skills and encouraging the next generation of engineers and makers. Hopefully, we will get to meet and inspire some of our future employees and makers at this year’s National Manufacturing Day.”

Stephen Phipson, CEO of Make UK, the manufacturers organisation added: “This is a really exciting day where the whole manufacturing sector will come together to celebrate the amazing things that Britain designs and makes.

“Britain’s manufacturing companies are at the forefront of global renewable technology development and some of the most innovative engineering developments seen anywhere around the world. This is a sector with amazing opportunities and we hope this third National Manufacturing Day will give people who have never had the chance to see inside their local businesses just what is going on and the opportunities available to them.”
